Ukraine's power grid just got a major boost from abroad ⚡

The Climate Investment Funds approved a $116.2 million investment plan for Ukraine under the Renewable Energy Integration program. Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal announced it on October 6. The money goes to renewable generation, electricity storage and cross-border power links.

The public part was built with the World Bank and Ukrenergo and totals around $200 million. Its flagship project is the 400 kV Chernivtsi to Suceava interconnector, which adds 880 MW of transfer capacity toward Ukraine and 445 MW toward the EU. Five high-voltage substations will also be modernized and better protected, along with Ukrenergo's IT and communications systems.

The private part is developed with IFC and EBRD. It supports investment in storage, including standalone battery systems with a total capacity of 610 MW, plus renewables paired with storage and other distributed solutions.

The result should be a more flexible grid, easier electricity trade with Europe and faster integration into the European network.
